Today’s Killer Startup: ThePresent

Elevator Pitch:

The world’s first 365-day clock keeps people in the present moment by encouraging long-term thinking and mindful living.

Why It’s A Killer Startup:

Everything today is go, go, go and now, now, now. For those of us who spend the majority of our time in the digital world, this is especially true. The 24-hour news cycle combined with the special brand of keeping up with the Joneses that is being a startup founder means that it can be especially hard to find time to reflect or think long term.

“How can you live in the moment when the moment changes every second?” founder Scott Thrift asks in ThePresent explainer video.

ThePresent is a beautifully designed clock that has a 365-day cycle. Mimicking a more natural flow of time than the human-made 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24-hour, 7-day construct, The Present’s cycle is exactly the same as one rotation of the earth around the sun.

The clock face itself displays colors that signify different times of year, starting with pure white to represent the winter solstice. The watch then moves through shades of green into a pure green until it hits the spring equinox. The apex of summer is represented by pure yellow, the autumn equinox is red, and then the clock returns to white at the winter equinox.

While ThePresent is a beautiful object even without the deeper meaning, it’s actually part of a bigger movement toward mindfulness – focusing on the here and now instead of being preoccupied with the past or future. Originating in Buddhism, mindfulness has become increasingly popular as the stress of modern life becomes more and more intense.

ThePresent has already completed a successful Kickstarter campaign and is currently raising a round from credited investors on Fundable. Whether you’re an investor or not, if you’re interested in learning more, head on over and check out what they’re doing.
