Rec.fm – Benefit Charities By Recommending Products
A 2010 SXSW Web Award finalist, Rec.fm is a new service whereby product recommendations are created and shared, and these actually benefit charities.
That is, the site lets anybody connect with his friends and share his favorites. When the product is actually purchased, half the proceeds are donated to the charity of that person’s choice.
All you have to do in order to create a recommendation through the site is to look up the product and then “rec” it by writing a few lines about what makes it special. All major social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are already integrated, and the same goes for commerce networks such as Amazon.com and Shopping.com. In actuality, you can easily log in using either your Twitter or Facebook account so that you can start recommending items without delays of any kind.
One of the most interesting aspects of the site is that the usage of proprietary technology implies that “trusted” products are prioritized, effectively letting searchers find what is best or at least more reliable from the many recommendations that are served on the site.
