The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) came into existence in 1999 to support open source software projects that relate to the public good. The foundation’s website,, gives an overview of the group’s history, purpose, structure and governing body. Originally incorporated as Apache Group, ASF operates as a non profit organization where granting of membership only occurs by nomination and resulting approval by a majority of existing members. A board of directors handles oversight of ASF and it governs by following a set of approved foundation bylaws.
