Care4Teen.com – Make The Internet Safer

  • February 22, 2012

Care4Teen.comThe Internet is a great research and communication tool, but its darker sides are really gloomy. The simplest search terms on sites like Google and Bing can produce pages after pages of inappropriate content. As grown-ups, we know which sites to visit and which to leave well alone. But our children don’t. And we can’t be with them 24/7 to show them the way, we can’t be by their side at all hours to explain them the actual significance of the pictures and videos they can see on their computer screens. And that’s where a site like Care4Teen comes in.

Care4Teen.com is a community of parents that work together to make the Internet a much safer place for children the world over. Care4Teen is a collaborative control service that gives you the chance to monitor the sites your kids are visiting remotely. By installing the provided application, you can see absolutely everything that your children are doing online.

Besides, Care4Teen works as a blocking service that keeps your child from accessing these websites which have been flagged as inappropriate by you and other Care4Teen parents.

Care4Teen works with Windows XP, Vista, 7 or above, and the application can be downloaded in seconds. It currently weighs no more than 7MB. And it’s also possible to try the service without having to sign up for an account first. A demo is available for you to sample the most remarkable aspects of the application in person.

Listsear.ch – Simultaneous Google Searches

  • February 2, 2012

Listsear.ch

Here’s something worth some attention. Listsear.ch is hardly a website, but rather a stand alone page with a search engine. To be more precise, with Google‘s search engine. But as simple as it may seem, there’s a turn to it.

Listsear.ch does something which Google does not do, believe it or not. This consists of multiple and simultaneous searches of the terms you enter on the search box. If you need to make, for example, four searches about different topics, just type them down in the text box provided.

Each line of text will be taken as a separate search item, and if you press the “Search list” button, those same terms will appear below the box. You can click on each one of them to go directly to the search results in Google. But also, if you click on “Open all”, all results will appear on different tabs in your browser.

It’s true that anyone can do this on its own by opening different tabs on his browser and enter their the search terms. But on each one you must click on the search button after typing what you want to look for. Listsear.ch makes multiple searches much more practical.

The service allows you as well to share the results through Facebook or Twitter. Maybe such a simple design does not make it a visually attractive site, but it is a practical one for sure.

Sobotong.com – Search The Web In Two Languages

  • December 29, 2011

Sobotong.com

Sobotong.com is a bilingual search engine that lets you look up one search term or phrase and get the results in two different languages. You may think why on earth would you need such a tool for your navigation, but the world wide web has more dark corners that may be not that easy to get at. For this Sobotong may give you a hand.

Still not really convinced? Just think that some of the topics you want to find information about are not really popular and will not be included in the results of the main search engines. Or the subject you want to read about is present more in other language sites and not so much in English, because it has much more to do with a particular culture.

For example, you want to know about the Spanish copla singer Miguel de Molina, about whom all of Spain is really proud. Well, then it seems more probable that you will find this kind of information in some Spanish website or at least one written in that language. But still, you would rather stick to a site written in English if you could. Well then, doing your search in both languages can be a real help to save you some time in your search.

Sobtong’s
site is really simple. Like in every other internet search engine, you get a box where you must write the search terms for what you want to find. But below it, two other boxes are included, each one of them with a drop down menu. In those you must enter the main language in which you want your results and the secondary language. Then, go back to the Search button to make the search and that’s pretty much it.

Kidbox.net – Internet For Children

  • December 13, 2011

Kidbox.netLetting your little kids access the Internet on their own is absolutely out of the question. You either stand by their side every single minute they’re online, or you get an application that filters the kind of content they come across on the web. And Kidbox is exactly that kind of application. It can limit the content that your little ones have access to on the Internet. Kidbox can filter sites, games and videos, and you

(as the parent) can have your own input on everything. You can prioritize these categories that you want your children to focus their time on when they’re online.

So, if you want them to focus on educational videos instead of spending all their time playing games then you can easily fix that. In each and every case, your children will have everything laid out on a simple, intuitive interface that also looks really good.

Kidbox is available in English and in Spanish, and pretty soon it’ll also be available in Portuguese.

And other web services that have been created to let children enjoy the Internet safely include Kidyos and PikLuk.

ACRO.net – Technology Rants and Raves by Acroplex

  • October 12, 2011

ACRO.netThe blog of Acroplex, Acro.net takes a look at the pros and cons of recent technology. Acroplex is a web design firm based in Orlando, Florida. They were first established as a web and graphics development firm and have since incorporated domain name monetization into their wheelhouse. Although Acroplex was first established in 1997, the ACRO blog wasn’t started until February 2008. Blog posts cover a variety of topics including not only technology and gadgets but politics, social issues, humor, and general business as well.

A recent post of Acro.net, titled “Kindle cannot light my fire” took a look at the new Kindle Fire device. Branching out from eBooks, the Kindle Fire has a full color, 7 inch, multi-touch display and allows users to now only read but also surf the web, watch movies, play games, and use other apps. The Fire will be released on November 15, 2011 and pre-orders are already available from Amazon.

The blog post on ACRO comes to the conclusion that reading books… on paper is better for the environment than eBook readers. The Acro.net blog proposes that all of the digital trash that will eventually find its way into landfills will be far worse on the environment because of the chemicals from the devices being released into the air, land, and water. In contrast, reading books (on paper) just cuts down a few trees in the Amazon.

Associates of the ACRO blog, as listed on the site, are Acroplex LLC, DomainGang.com, GreekBloggers, and Terrestrial Holdings LLC. On the Acroplex website, they mention that their name is taken from the Greek word “Acro” which means “edge” and the Latin word “plex” which means “fold.” This would make the literal translation of their name “Edge Fold,” which makes ACRO.net the “fold” blog.
