Twitter: Don’t Let Brevity Affect Your Grammar!

  • January 22, 2014

It’s the curse of Twitter: You have so much to say but very little space in which to say it. You don’t want to be one of those people who floods Twitter with a stream of tweets to say all of the things you have to say. That makes you look like you’re ranting! Instead, you look at your message and think…

Grammarly.com – Check Your Grammar

  • January 31, 2011

Grammarly.comWith its ability to have any text proofread and analyzed, Grammarly stands as a really interesting alternative for all those who want to become better writers. Not only can this application check grammar and punctuation on the whole, it can also detect texts that are plagiarized and perform deep stylistic analyses. Grammarly is able to tell you where you should begin focusing your attention in order to improve your writing in a reasonable amount of time.

Some of the grammar checks that Grammarly can run include looking for subject-verb agreements, faulty parallelisms, run-on sentences and comma splices… It is claimed on the site that Grammarly can carry over 150 different grammar tests, and while it is obviously impossible for me (or for anybody) to say whether that is accurate, I must say that the texts I threw at it were processed more than satisfactorily. But there is no reason for you to take my word for it – you can have texts analyzed for free, and without having to even sign up first. Just go and do.

LetterLearning.com – Help Kids Write Better

  • January 19, 2011

LetterLearning.comA site created by a teacher, Letter Learning has been designed to assist these parents that are worried about the literacy skills of their children. Through this site, they will be able to send greeting cards to their little ones, and slowly let them improve their spelling, letter formation, handwriting and reading skills. Birthday cards Thank You cards, Just Because cards… these are all readily sendable through the site, and they all come with the kind of cute designs and characters that anything which is children-related should bear.

And the site actually offers much more than that, as advanced cards for practicing math and other traditionally taxing topics can also be delivered.

In the end, the role a site such as this one can play in the life of any children is more than obvious. Text messaging and short communications have put the literacy skills of the younger ones on jeopardy. Personalized cards that are sent by their loved ones stand as the most meaningful context in which they could become acquainted with proper grammar and spelling.

AIType.com – Helping People Write Much Better

  • October 4, 2010

AIType.comA.I.

Type is a tool that will mostly appeal to foreigners who have a basic understanding of English and want to sound as natural as possible when writing. Basically, this tool can offer word suggestions to the users right as they are typing. And it can also auto-correct and auto-replace these words that could give them away as non-native speakers of English.

Moreover, A.I.

Type lets the user get instant translations of what he is writing down in his native language. That will let him spot any “false friends” (IE, words whose lexical identity lends itself to confusions) right as he is typing away, as well as spotting grammar mistakes more easily.

A future version of A.I.

Type will introduce a very ambitious feature: letting the user activate different styles of writing that he can actually predefine himself. That is as interesting as it is bold, and I am eagerly waiting to see how well that is actually implemented when the day comes. In the meantime, you can download the current version of A.I.

Type on the site at just no cost.

SpellBoy.com – A Tool For Checking Your Spelling

  • June 6, 2010

SpellBoy.comIf you are concerned about the state of disrepair the English language is in, you might like to take a closer look at this website. It is named SpellBoy, and it will let you have any text that you input in the box that it provides analyzed word by word.

You will be immediately informed when (and if) a grammar mistake surfaces.

As a translator, I am always preoccupied with the way in which languages evolve and take shape over time. Hence, I find a site like this one appealing. However, there are add-ons for Firefox that play out a very similar role. That is, you install them and then any portion that is at fault is underlined in red as you are typing away. That is the basic role that SpellBoy provides, in the end, and while these add-ons do not have all the flexibility of SpellBoy when it comes to editing the text, it is also true that many won’t be bothered to launch a separate application just to check something that an add-on can check on the spot. That somehow dilutes the impact SpellBoy can have, but I honestly believe it is more than an acceptable application in itself.

Korekt.me – Have Your Text Proofread

  • February 28, 2010

Korekt.meProofreading is a pivotal part of the process whereby a text is elaborated. Bypassing it is like buying the best alarm for your car but not bothering to check whether you actually lock the doors or not.

This site will let you have any text that you have written in English proofread. The system woks by having you submit your text online (you copy and paste it) and then receiving an estimate of how long would it take for it to be corrected (based on the actual length of the text), and how much it would all cost. On average, a page would cost something like € 6.00. That is, provided it has 300 words. If the document includes less words then the price is going to be lower.

I really wish they had somehow included a free trial on the site, because the only way to try the service to the full is actually paying the lowest fee that is charged (€ 1.00). Maybe they should consider adding some “Before and After” examples.

MostVotedSites.com – Editor Warehouse

  • February 16, 2008

MostVotedSites.comMostVotedSites.com is a resource center for editors and proofreaders of written material, comprising links to grammar, typography, proofreading and spellchecking articles in the web.

The site seems to be only in the early stages of development, so the link directories are quite meager for the time being, however the selection is concise and to-the-point, so when searching for a very specific issue, MostVotedSites.com comes in very handy. Given that the links to which this site points to are very self-explanatory, it will be probably self-published authors using Lulu’s self editing services, and even bloggers who’ll build up to be its frequent users. To the right of the screen you can see links to npr.com’s international highlights section, which makes one think that the site might develop to cater not only for writers of original fiction and poetry, but to journalists as well.
