News-Sentinel.com – News Of Fort Wayne, Indiana

  • May 21, 2008

News-Sentinel.comYou no longer have to be in Indiana to read The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne’s local newspaper, though the truth be told that there’s not really too much of interest for non-residents of the area. This daily, which you can read in its online version by visiting this site, covers basically all the standard areas that local news outlets are expected to: community, sports, weather, with some interesting features and opinion articles.

Interestingly, and not unlike similar sites, News-Sentinel.com presents lots of media content, including video and image slideshows, plus registered users can order prints online. I was happy to see that the archive is partially available on the site (1990 onwards), though I was expecting it to be tagged or at least highlighted for interesting or strange articles. The News Sentinel also features a classifieds section, plus you can take a look at the special sections the magazine publishes as supplements in ePaper format. If you are a subscriber to the print edition, log on to manage your account details. News-Sentinel.com

ForewordMagazine.com – Independent Book Review

  • April 13, 2008

ForewordMagazine.comAt first glance, one could very easily confuse ForewordMagazine.com with a literary journal, but if you take a moment to look around you’ll see that this magazine is about so much more than just books: it has really more to do with what happens in the hiatus between a manuscript is submitted to a publishing house for approval, and gets sold in a bookshop or goes to a library bookshelf.

Since they seem to be more concerned about what is really going on in the kitchen of books, well, their product is certainly of interest to a very different audience to which the average literary journal aims to, and targets mainly agents, publishers, booksellers and librarians. By visiting the site, users can read the ePaper version of the current issue (which can be a bit complicated, as the magazine has an impossible amount of ads), or read selected pieces and opinion articles in web version. All the content that goes into this bi-monthly publication is original editorial content, and each of the issues seem to cover a specific issue, like faith in the case of the one that can be read on the site these days. For aspiring agents and authors, Foreword Magazine is a great place to learn about conventions and calls for submissions. While you are waiting for the next issue to appear, explore the subscription area to learn how much it costs to have the magazine delivered to your home, or take a look at the daily book reviews, or the selection of articles for other sources deemed worthwhile reading by the editorial team. WinchesterStar.com – Winchester Online News Source

  • April 9, 2008

WinchesterStar.comThe Winchester Star is a local newspaper catering for Virginia’s city of Winchester, and it provides all sorts of news and several in-depth reports on varied topics of local interest. You will not find much international news at this site, rather more community-focused news mainly in text format with the occasional picture, but really little online-only features, which seem to be the norm in other newspapers’ sites, like photo and audio slideshows or videos, plus there are no blogs either –I reckon maybe it’s time to call the news desk and tell them that Web 2.

0 has been around for some time now. Other than the regular sections you’d expect from a local paper, take a look at the Business section to find out about local startups, or the Lifestyle area to learn about social activities, fundraisers and art exhibits opening in Winchester. The archives of the digital version of the paper are available, but they only date back to august 2007. An ePaper version of The Winchester Star is also available, though by paid subscription only; if you are unsure whether this format will work out for you, it could be a good idea to subscribe for the free trial mentioned in the site, though I couldn’t find any links to it. If you’d rather stick to the regular paper issue, you can subscribe or manage your subscription details through the site as well. WinchesterStar.com
