Startup Advice On How To Grow Your Online User Base

If you’re a business with any sort of online presence, you know just how essential your user base is to the success of your business. They are your best friends, your bread and butter, your most important asset; bottom line- the more you have, the more successful your business will be. Here are some top tips to help your user base (and bank account) grow.

Sharing is Caring

Collaboration, interaction, sharing; these are the words that are attracting users and should be integral to your business. If you’re…well…not exactly a fuzzy-wuzzy sharing type of company, you can still provide incentives for sharing such as a referral system (refer a friend, get a discount, etc.).

One of the most important things to remember when attracting (and maintain) users is the all-important “Call to Action”. Users need to have clear direction when interacting with your site:

  • Search For Friends
  • Invite Your Friends
  • Start The Conversation

The more concise you are with your call to actions, the likelier your users will abide and share and grow your base.

Smooth Landing

Your landing page is user’s first impression and interaction with your business. Just like a first date, you want to make sure you look good and you’re not complicated. Again, your call to actions should be clear and easy. Don’t ask for more info than you absolutely need from users (otherwise they’ll move on).

You’ve probably noticed the demo video and explainer video trend that’s happening right now. This is an excellent way of animating and explaining to your user exactly what your product or service does. Demo Duck does a great job with this. If it’s in your budget, do it. If not, attractive photos of other users using your product with “to the point” information will keep your users attracted and around longer.

Making Tracks

Finally, collect as much data as you can about your users, this way you can specify your marketing efforts and/or see what areas are lacking in terms of  user base.

I recently wrote a blog post on my personal blog and blogger.com now provides user analytics such as how many people read my blog on exactly what day and where they’re from in the world, etc. It’s awesome and insightful, and if I ever wanted to monetize my blog I would have the tools to boost my efforts.

There are many services that can help you do the same with your users, like:

  1. Clicky Web Analytics
  2. W3 Counter Analytics
  3. Click Density

Get your users sharing, give them a great first impression and track what they’re doing, and you’ll be sure to see your user base grow.
