4 Easy Ways To Boost Your Site Usability

If your startup hasn’t invested time and energy thinking about your site usability, then listen up! As one of the most overlooked elements of web design, it happens to be one of the most important.


When a customer lands on your site, you want them to be engaged with your content and interested in the way you’ve presented the navigational elements. Your site is a huge part of your brand, after all!


Every time a user hits an obstacle, whether it’s unclear links or a visually distracting site, you’re at a very high risk of them going to a competitor’s site.


We don’t want that, of course, so let’s take a look at some quick tips to guarantee your users will be successfully navigating your site.





1. Global Navigation

You want the navigation throughout your site to be consistent and this is what the term global navigation refers to. For example, if on your home page you have set out the links on the left side of the page, then on the interior pages you don’t want the links to be suddenly on the right side.


Another mistake you want to avoid is renaming links. If on your home page your links say “about,” “contact us,” and “pricing,” then you want those elements to remain exactly the same throughout your startup’s site. Consistency is key here!





2. The Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are the how users identify exactly where they are on your site. It’s a navigational tool that visually displays where the user is so that they can easily jump back a step or check other locations on your site for information without having to start over.


An example is like when you are shopping for books online, you may see “Books->ebooks ->fiction->Doctorow” showing you the hierarchal structure that you’ve navigated; in this case, to find books with last name of “Doctorow” as the author.


Including breadcrumbs as part of your site’s navigation can make the user’s experience much more clear and intuitive. I definitely prefer sites that use breadcrumbs.


3. The Readability

Even with excellent articles and attractive images, users will eventually stop visiting your site if thentext isn’t laid out for easy reading. For example, proper spacing, bullets, short paragraphs, and a large enough font are absolutely essential in keeping users coming back to your site.


If you’ve not made the text layout easy on the eyes, it won’t matter how good the text is or what product you’re offering. Remember, it has to be readable!





4. Think Simplicity

Your startup’s site needs to be easy to use. It’s as simple as that. The fewer clicks a user needs to accomplish what they want from your site, whether it’s reading articles, reading about you, contacting you, or buying your product directly, the better.


Remember not to include surveys or other unnecessary forms to fill out. Also, don’t bombard users with unnecessary images or text. If you focus on your users and your customers, then you’ll find that simplicity and usability will flow naturally!
