Calling All Wordsmiths: Synonyms.net Is Your Premier Resource To Find The Perfect Synonyms and Antonyms

As someone who works with words all day long, I am constantly searching for new, interesting, and yes more impressive words to add to my writing repertoire. So sites like Synonyms.net are my saviors. But even if you’re not a wordsmith, a site like this can help you with those annoying, “what’s that word that’s similar to…” moments. Or, if you just want to learn new words and their meanings each day. This site is worth checking out.

Crash Course

OK, I don’t think you’re dense, but for the sake of this article I’m going to do a quick definition lesson:

  1. Synonyms – different words that have similar or identical meanings. Examples: Happy and joyful or exhausted and tired.
  2. Antonyms – you probably guessed it, these are words that mean the opposite. Examples include interested and bored or calm and aggressive.

Easy peasy. But there are hundreds of thousands of words in the English language so resources like Synonyms.net are incredibly helpful for our word banks.

Here’s how it works:

Search

Type in what word you want to find similar words for, click search and watch as both synonyms and antonyms for that word return as well as a visual representation.

Learn

The site also has a “term of the day” with the definition, synonyms and antonyms for that word. And chances are you probably don’t know the word. For example:

Catarrhine – Old World monkey, catarrhine (adj): Of Africa or Arabia or Asia; having nonprehensile tails and nostrils close together.

Not, sure when you’ll need to reference a Catarrhine, but now you know. And that’s called learning, my friend.

Stands4 Network

Synonyms.net is part of the vast collection of online reference sites from STANDS4 Network. The network has been praised by the Writer’s Digest’s and American Library Association, winning, “Best websites for 2005,” and, “Best Free Reference Websites 2012,” respectively.

Stands4 Network Resources include:

  1. Synonyms.net – yeah, covered that.
  2. Abbreviations.com – search engine for acronyms, abbreviations and initialisms. Helpful for cracking all that LOL, iOS and TTYL nonsense.
  3. Lyrics.net – huge directory of lyrics for all those rap songs you want to learn.
  4. Rhymes.net – is a online rhyming dictionary for just about every word. Great for poets like my man Keith Liles.
  5. Quotes.net – thousands of famous quotations from our fave quotable legends.

This whole network of amazing word-related references has got me all excited (nerd alert!) So, if you’re looking for the perfect synonym and/or antonym, in a one-stop-reference-shop, check out Synonyms.net. Sounds like I’m being pretty exploitative (another “term of the day”) of the site. That’s because words are cool and wordsmiths are sexy. At least I think so!
