The number of learning resources available online today is astonishing. Students have unprecedented access to information, e-courses, and learning aids. However, for the pupil in need of additional personal instruction, one figure has been curiously absent from most attempts to disrupt education: the tutor.
MyTutorWeb looks to connect students to outstanding private tutors online at a price that parents can afford. The website serves as an online classroom where excellent university students help secondary school students improve their understanding of subjects and prepare for exams.
A New Approach To E-Learning
The virtual classroom software strips away geographic barriers between teachers and pupils. Tutors can instruct students living anywhere, and no longer need waste time traveling between different locations. Students benefit from working in the comfort of their preferred learning environment. The platform enables video and voice chats, instant messaging, a shared interactive whiteboard, and document uploads.
Students receive not only quality instruction but study tailored to meet individual needs. Custom academic support takes into account different academic requirements, learning pace and style. Since sessions may be recorded, students have the opportunity to review lessons and take greater advantage of one-to-one mentoring – while parents may watch sessions to ensure that their children are receiving satisfactory teaching.
Students rate and review tutors in TripAdvisor fashion, which helps others match with appropriate tutors as well as gives student tutors valuable feedback. An arranged meet and greet before any paid sessions further ensures that students pair with the right tutor. What’s more, since tutors are more peers than professional teachers, they can relate well to students’ exam anxieties and academic pains.
Meet The Tutors
Based in the UK, MyTutorWeb helps students train for A-levels, GCSES, IBs, IGCSEs and Scottish Highers as well as prepare for University Admissions Tests, Oxbridge and Medical School entrance and University Personal Statements. Tutors are selected carefully based on academic achievement and communication skills, (out of 1500 applicants so far, they have selected 150 tutors to give lessons).
Student tudors gain valuable teaching experience by joining the platform, which both looks good on resumes and reinforces their own learning. The online model allows them to construct workloads that fit around their own studies and schedules. While student tutors pocket money, they also help lower the costs of private training.
Founder Rob Grabiner was motivated to create MyTutorWeb in part because of his own struggles to find quality, reasonably priced tutoring for his teenage daughter. MyTutorWeb sessions begin at prices as low as £16 per hour, which makes private tutoring, traditionally an option for privileged few, a far more affordable service for children from lower income families. Only six months out from launching, the startup has already handled over 1,000 tutorial bookings. For more information, find MyTutorWeb on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
