Elevator Pitch:

Take it turns your digital prints into physical photos, for free.

Why It’s A Killer Startup:

I love looking at old pictures. Ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite things to do is sift through old photo albums. There’s my mom smoking a joint in the ‘70s; there’s my dad with ‘80s New Wave blonde hair; there’s me, tiny and swaddled in purple.

One thing that worries me about our current tendency to keep everything digital is that it’s so easy to lose all of our pictures and it’s totally possible that, despite the fact that we’re now documenting everything more than ever, my someday future kids won’t have any photo albums to sift through.

Take it solves that worry by offering you five free prints per month, from pics on your iPhone. (Sorry Android users.) The prints are 3.55 by 3.95 inches, which the site says look similar to classic Polaroids. They’ll also ship worldwide, for only $2.99 or for free in France, so you can’t even let something like cost of shipping get in your way when you’re deciding whether or not you want the images.

While Take it offers five free photos per month, you can also earn more by sharing your pics in the app. The more popular your images are, the more physical photos you earn. On the other hand, if you’re content with just picking out the five per month that really mean something (kind of like in the old days of film cameras, right?) then you can always just do that too.

Maybe I’m just following the trend of my generation of being nostalgic for times gone by, but I really love the idea of having actual, physical objects to hold on to and to pass on to my kids. Moments are ephemeral, and while digital photos definitely give us something to hold onto, they can all be erased with one crash of a hard drive. (Or, you know, the environmental apocalypse that is rapidly approaching.) Get some photos in your mailbox now with Take it!
