Today’s Killer Startup: Travel With Maker

Elevator Pitch:

Travel With Makers connects people with ideas with the makers who can help make them happen, in order to build an MVP in an amazing location.

Why It’s A Killer Startup:

Here are two things that startup founders love: creating things and traveling.  As I write this, I’m sitting on the main floor of Hubud, which just might be the most famous coworking space in digital nomad circles right now. The room is filled with startup founders and creative professionals, working away at jobs that allow them to live at least part of the year on this beautiful tropical island. For example, directly across from me is the team from Maptia, Startup Chile and TechStars alums who are working on building an amazing storytelling platform. They’ve been country hopping for years at this point and show no sign of slowing down, living in South America, Morocco, Switzerland and now Bali — to name just a few.

But not everyone has the life setup that allows them to travel full time the way I do and Maptia does. That’s where an awesome program like Travel With Makers comes in. The service connects paying members with ideas with a team of Makers pulled from Product Hunt’s community.

Makers with a Product Hunt profile can apply to take a totally free trip to one of the locations they offer. (Right now they’re offering Costa Rica, Spain, Thailand, and Montreal.) People with ideas that they want to turn into a reality can submit their idea and budget, then sit back and wait for the site to match them with the creative geniuses of their dreams. Finally, all of the Makers who participate get a stake in the final MVP.

Travel With Makers offers one free spot for every two paying people. There are only 12 to 15 spots per trip, so competition is definitely fierce, although apparently they’re doing it on a first come, first serve basis for now. However, the trips last from one to four weeks and are all-inclusive — and Makers don’t pay a dime — so I’d say it’s definitely worth giving it a shot.
