I learned to cook while in college by watching Emeril Lagasse, as he helped launch the Food Network into stardom with his flagship show, The Essence of Emeril. When I wasn’t able to reproduce his dishes on my student budget, I was still learning how to cook and how to shop for ingredients (lessons that have stayed with me much longer than a lot of what I took from my university courses).
One afternoon, I happened across a announcement in the paper that Emeril would be giving a cooking demonstration at a local bookshop. Notes left open, radio left on – a few recklessly driven miles later, and I was able to watch my TV mentor do his thing in person. And I can still wilt spinach without turning it into mush to this day, some 15 years later.
Now, the Internet and social media have undoubtedly made culinary events more visible, coinciding with skyrocketing interest in culinary tourism, but cooking classes have largely remained the stuff of local insider (read: overlooked) knowledge.
Cookly is a new platform for discovering cooking classes – around the world. I’m admittedly biased, but I find sampling local cuisines one of greatest pleasures of travel. And one of the greatest tortures is not being able to replicate delicious bites.
