I don’t know if you have listened to a song named “Prince Of The Punks” by The Kinks. If you did, chances are you picked it up on the “One For The Road” album, which I understand was a massive hit when it was released, and which marked the high point of the Kinks’ stardom in the States during the 70’s – 80’s period.
The thing with that song is that it narrates the life of a fellow who was not very talented musically, and it explains why he picked up punk music. At one point it says something along the lines of “he tried modern jazz but couldn’t do it because they play it in difficult keys”. That seems to be the general conceit when it comes to jazz – it is music that entails a degree of proficiency of its own, or at the very least a certain formal mastery.
Although I am a fervent music lover, I know nothing about jazz. This social network let me learn a little about the genre, and I must say I had a very satisfying time. As well as including information on different artists doing the rounds (including video and audio that is streamed on the spot), the site lets fans meet up and engage into conversation in the way that social sites often do.
In addition to that, if you are a jazz musician yourself you will be able to promote your music online. As a result, it can be said that individuals who have different interests in the genre are fully accounted for, and that even if you have just a passing interest in jazz you will find it worth perusing.
