Today’s Killer Startup: Domino
Domino is an online community for freelancers.
Why It’s A Killer Startup:
The freelancer revolution is here, guys. With the help of laptops and increasingly high-speed internet access, more and more people are realizing that the stifling existence that is the cubicle life is not for them. In fact, Forbes reports that there are an estimated 53 million freelancers in the US alone — and reports that number is expected to reach 50% by 2020. Fifty-percent of the workforce, guys! That’s a huge number of people working independently!
As someone who has been freelancing for more than four years at this point, I get a lot of questions about how to get started and how to keep going once you’ve started. While I’m more than happy to help out when people reach out, it’s also great to have other resources to point folks to, because, well, I’m only one woman and there are only so many hours in the day.
Domino has recently been added to my roster of great freelancer resources. The site itself is super simple, with a list of questions that people have and responses from the community. They have advice on everything from how to manage a remote team to how to organize files for a client to mixing business life and personal life. They also just have general questions, like how many hours per day people work, or where folks found their first client.
Another cool aspect of Domino is their Slack group, which is free — so that’s awesome. It’s a place to hang out, chat, and ask real-time questions of other freelancers around the world. Considering the fact that one of the hardest things about working freelance is figuring out how to make sure you talk to people during the day who aren’t your cat, this is a great resource.
So whether you’re new to the freelance game or you’re already an old hat, check out Domino for everything you need to know.
