Elevator Pitch:

HireOwl connects students looking for paid work experience with the companies that want to hire them.

Why It’s A Killer Startup:

As a college student who always had to work for money over the summer, I definitely resented those rich kids who didn’t have to worry about loans or paying for books or putting gas in their cars and therefore could just bag these super plummy internships that looked great on their resumes, while I was stuck renovating houses. Now, don’t get me wrong: I loved renovating houses. I just knew that I didn’t want to be renovating houses forever and therefore needed some experience doing something more relevant to my future goals.

College kids these days can escape those feelings of resentment that plagued me by checking out HireOwl. HireOwl specifically links up students looking for valuable jobs — both in the experience and monetary sense — with the companies who are down to hire them.

On the hiring side, all companies have to do is post their job details. HireOwl then notifies students who are qualified, and the hiring company gets email updates when those kids apply. Even once the job is underway, HireOwl handles all the busywork, like timesheet and payments. They make it as easy as possible for your company to hire eager, bright young minds who will help move you forward.

On the student side, HireOwl promises a minimum pay of $10 per hour, which often goes up as high as $25 an hour, so there’s no one working for free here. Students also get great resume boosters, a chance to grow their professional networks, and exposure to industries that aren’t, for example, their dad’s renovation business. (No offense, Dad: I still brag about the fact that I could totally lay down a whole new floor, if needed.)
