This Week’s Best In Beta: Order, Reign O’er Me

This Week’s Best In Beta

Which startup is going to be the next big thing? Investors, bloggers, job seekers, and inspiring entrepreneurs everywhere are dying to know. Hundreds of startups enter private beta each month, and that’s far too many for any one person to keep up with. Fret not! Each week, I share some of the hottest new startups in this column, Best In Beta. Let’s discover the next big thing together!

1. Pip West

Just sat down to write, and, of course, my phone starts to ring, which is not so conveniently charging in another room. For once I’m not going to dash and pick it up disgruntled, however, because the situation demonstrates conveniently why Pip West is a winning concept.

Pip West is a “picture-in-picture” application that puts your mobile device on your desktop. Instead of toggling back and forth between your computer and smartphone, you can access your phone (complete with touch controls) on the screen that you’re already looking at.

We love our smartphones so much that we use them for work and have a hard time turning away from them. I know I’m guilty of compulsively trying to use multiple screens and take advantage of different tools and data I have stashed all over the place. This behavior is both a little crazy and definitely inefficient. Pip West would streamline my work nicely.

Slated to launch in 2015, the Pip West website says that the software can already transfer 90% of either your iOS or Android phone’s functionality onto your desktop. Will the screen merge catch fire? Will this change how we work? I’m eager to see how things play out.

2. Startup Stash

I’m not sure whether it’s a check against my obsessive-compulsive tendencies or just another example of them, but I’m a bit of an organizational freak. Alphabetized bookshelves have the same calming effect on me as a hot rock massage.

So, I’m inclined to love Startup Stash on principle even though we don’t have too much to evaluate yet. Startup Stash is “a curated directory of resources and tools to help you build your startup.” The company’s Facebook page offers a glimpse of tools grouped into lovely and simple folders such as “Design”, “Productivity”, “CRM”, “Mobile app Analytics.”

The array of tools available online is just staggering. There are lists galore, and new tools arriving at a silly rate. Who can keep up or keep things straight? What search makes finding tools easier?

Ah hem, a certain online publication takes care of wondering where to turn to find out about wonderful resources for entrepreneurs and where to discover amazing startups. Startup Stash promises a way to reach quickly for the type of tool you need at any given moment – a handy reference tool.

In case you’re asking how well they can be expected to understand startups’ needs, Startup Stash is free. Enough said. Receive notification of when they launch by subscribing at startupstash.com.
