This Week’s Best In Beta: #Freelance – At Last Freelancers Can Slack Off

This Week’s Best In Beta

Which startup is going to be the next big thing? Investors, bloggers, job seekers, and inspiring entrepreneurs everywhere are dying to know. Hundreds of startups enter private beta each month, and that’s far too many for any one person to keep up with. Fret not! Each week, I share some of the hottest new startups in this column, Best In Beta. Let’s discover the next big thing together!

#Freelance

“A community for freelancers on Slack.” Love the idea and love the choice of platform.

You’re using Slack already, right? So are the rest of us cool kids (well, cool by virtue of our choice of collaboration platform anyway). It’s where everybody is chatting now.

…except for freelancers with other freelancers. There are lots of platforms connecting freelancers with jobs, but not freelancers with each other.

A surprising amount of mystery rules the field.

If you’re in the game, chances are that you have a friend or two in the same line of work, but this is hardly the same as being connected with the wider freelance community, which currently expands at about the rate of the universe growing moments after the big bang.

A Slack community is a fast and easy way to connect. It will be interesting to listen to how the noise to value ratio sounds given that this community could be enormous. High marks nonetheless for zeroing in on a glaring disconnect among a professional group.

Sure, you can find plenty of tips and general advice related to freelance work online, but it’s mostly impersonal. There’s really nowhere to share stories, send excess work to capable people, etc. One of the hardest things about working independently is not having a crew to vent to and share experiences, laugh with, or learn beside while getting a job done.

Until #Freelance. As every freelancer knows, the work can be solitary. Unhealthily so. #Freelance is a great way to disengage from the voices inside your head or yet another conversation with the cat – if not to figure out how to become a better freelancer or find job opportunities.

Isolation and silence be damned! Freelancers unite! If you’re a freelancer wanting to connect with other freelancers who share your common struggles and victories, request an invite at hashtagfreelance.co.
