Astm.com – The Standardbearer

Over the course of time, people work out standard procedures and measurements to use while working. These standards are captured and made available to all through the American Society for Testing and Materials with a website at astm.com. ASTM is the clearinghouse for test methods, specifications, guides and practices for over 12,000 different industries and businesses.

ASTM.com is designed to be used by anyone working in fields as diverse as atomic engineering and pavement contracting. Both of these very different industries have standards – for materials and how they are used, specifications for tools and procedures for common practices – and these agreed-upon techniques are all available on ASTM.org.

Visitors to the site may search or browse based on keyword or subject area, and may also check out the ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library. This collection of manuals and technical information covers a wide range of disciplines, including aerospace, medical, petroleum and soil science engineering. Those who wish a hardcopy of all these documents may order one through ASTM.com – the full set costs $10,287.00 in paper or on CD-ROM.

As a centralized point for the dissemination of information, ASTM.com has many different paths to knowledge. The latest relevant news items are on display, plus a calendar of upcoming membership meetings, training events, symposia and workshops that allow engineers and designers to put this theoretical knowledge into practical production. ASTM is a membership organization, and a basic participating membership costs $75. Membership benefits include a free volume of standards, discounts on publications and the ability to participate directly in committees that help shape the organization’s direction.
