Yaari.com – Desi Social Networking Site Wants You

Yaari.comYaari, which is Hindi for friendship, is a new social network catering to Indian youth, which also happens to be started by a couple of young Indians too. As with most other networks, Yaari’s got customizable profiles, media exchange, unlimited uploading, and messaging.

There are also a wide range of groups you can join (spiritual, music, sports, etc). Yaari Mobile allows users to take their networking to their cell phones and state up to date via SMS. As the site is still pretty fresh out of the box, there’s not a lot going on, yet. However, Yaari does have one glaring hitch—its TOS– once you register, Yaari will send all your contacts from the email address you provide an invite to Yaari which means you need to register with a Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail address. This is all good and fine if you don’t mind perhaps irritating your friends/colleagues, and giving away even more of your privacy, but for the most part, this little clause is sure to ruffle some feathers. That being said, if Yaari does want to become the largest Indian social network, they have found one way to get the word out.

Why Yaari.com It Might Be A Killer

Yaari is the brainchild of a young and ambitious Stanford graduate. Ms. Prerna Gupta has done her research and come up with a marketable and potentially profitable site that combines all the most common social networking features and given it a South Asian flavor.

Some Questions About Yaari.com

Will the TOS deter users from signing up? The very fact that you can’t opt out of the contact invites, and that you authorize Yaari control over your contacts list seems fishy. Yaari is also filled with advertising pop ups and banners which distract you from the friendship part of the site. Yaari.com
