Mu6.me – The Easy Way To Share Music With Your Friends And The World

Angel Lai is a 25 year-old drop-out from China. He taught himself programming and design and created Catfan.me, a social blogging site. His new venture is Mu6.me, a social music sharing site for our friends, family and the rest of the world to enjoy our tunes. We caught up with Angel to talk Mu6.me inspiration and what it will take to feel successful.

How’d you come up with the name for your company?

Because music sounds like mu + six, so Mu6. And using .me as subdomain means it is my music. The link of Mu6.me is short, easy to remember and friendly for a social community.

Remember the early days starting up? Maybe you can share one anecdote that describe the struggle you went through?

The idea of Mu6 came up when I was in bed thinking around. I worked only a week to program and design out the whole of the website, but I racked my brain a week to think over the name of website.

How do you picture Mu6.me in 5 years?

I hope Mu6 can be the music version of Youtube, the first choice to share music to friends or social community.

Who or what inspires YOU?

One day, I was lying on the bed and thinking, “Hey, if I want share videos with my friends I’ll choose Youtube, and if I want to share photos with my friends I’ll choose img.ly, Flickr or other, BUT what if I just want to share my music with my friends?! Oh my God, I don`t know!

So Mu6.me was born.

How’d you fund this venture?

I was self-funding. I earn freelance money from coding and designing. And because I`m a man who is living in a house nearly all day, it cuts down many daily costs and is enough to live on and keep the project running. I’ve only spent about $1,500 during 2 years.

Got any great bootstrapping tips for the lean startups out there?

  • Work in a house as your office, what the Japanese call Otaku. You can really save money in the beginning of your startup.
  • You can learn many things you don`t know for free on the Internet by yourself, without pay[ing] any money.
  • No girlfriend… more time, more money.

Do you consider yourself a successful entrepreneur right now? If not, what’s it gonna take to make you feel successful?

No, of course not. I will feel successful when I meet someone, and they told me: “Hey, man, your product is really nice. I love it!”

Website you couldn’t live without and why?

Google. I can find any information and knowledge I want from it, and he also provided a lot of useful services and tools I need.

Mobile App you’re in love with and why?

Game apps. It can let me feel pleasure if I want to take a little break.

Dogs or cats?

Cats. I love any cute and small animals.

iOS or Android?

I`m just using Siemens out-of-date mobile phone, and using an iPad (I got  it free from a PayPal event).

Number 1 country you’ve always wanted to visit but haven’t yet?

Any countries outside the Earth.

What’s the greatest thing about Mu6.me?

Share music to friends with only three steps. No registration needed.

Mu6 is powered by HTML5 technologies. It`s possible to drag and drop a file to upload, and play it from mobile devices, and fetch detailed information about the album and the author.

Where can our readers reach out?

Twitter or just email: catfan.me(at)gmail.com

I`m also the founder of Catfan– a kind of social blogging community, and the founder of Qatrix – an open source JavaScript framework project.

Thanks, Angel! If you’re feeling a little muisc-sharing love, head over to Mu6.me and start jammin out. I was just listening to Christina Aguilara’s You Lost Me. Damn, that girl can sing.
