Minilogs Turns The Entire Web Into A Playlist

At last, something from Paris that I can afford! Minilogs is a free, simple bookmarking app. Create links, collections of links or “logs” with unique URLs that make sharing media easy. Start a minilogs miniblog, make a collaborative playlist with your friends, or just use Minilogs as a media player. Share your logs using Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

Co-founder Paul-Marie Dubois is a passionate user of Minilogs himself. And while he lives and breathes his company like many entrepreneurs, he reminds us that sometimes gardens, baths, and late starts to the day can be essential elements to startup success. Talking with KillerStartups… it’s almost like he’s letting us all set up a Parisian office.

Tell us about your history with the Internet, your team’s background:

We are 3 partners: Otu, Jean-Philippe and myself. Jean-Philippe and I are French and were previously working in Finance (I was a trader in London and then did a bit of consulting, Jean-Philippe did credit derivatives structuring and risk management). Otu is a fantastic English developer, and has been involved in the Internet for 10 years. He is handling the technical side of our business.

What time do you usually start work each day?

We start work at 10am (which is typical in France) and finish late.

Do you have an office or work at home?

We do have an office, with a little garden, which is very nice to relax in this time of year [summer].

That sounds great. I wish my office had a little garden! What’s the first thing you do when you leave the office at the end of the day?

I go home and take a bath.

When do your best ideas come to you?

When I am in my bath, it really relaxes me and I can truly focus on the big picture.

We want to know about where you spend your day! What’s on your desk right now?

On my desk as I write these lines are:

  • 2 empty cups of coffee
  • My Android smartphone
  • A lot of scrap paper
  • An iMac: “this is where the magic happens” as they would say on MTV Cribs.
  • My scooter helmet. I could not live in Paris without my scooter.

What’s your office environment like?

Minilogs is a great way to create musical playlists. We do love it and do use it quite extensively in the office. This is typically what we would listen to during a work day.

Favorite movie? Band? Vacation Spot?

Well it’s difficult, I love cinema and music far too much to have a favorite movie or a favorite band. But let’s do it anyway!

  • Movie: Down by Law by Jim Jarmusch
  • Band: The Libertines
  • Vacation spot: Cap Ferret, a peninsula on the Atlantic coast next to Bordeaux. I used to spend my summer vacation there as a child.

A lot of people have big ideas. What gave you the confidence to actually put your life on hold and realize yours?

Do you know this quote from Albert Einstein: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” Well, starting this project was keeping moving!

How do you handle frustration? When/how was the last time you dealt with frustration?

We deal with frustration everyday. We love Minilogs so much that everything that comes in the way of its success becomes frustrating. Not being featured on KillerStartups would be a perfect example of something frustrating!

Well, we certainly don’t want to add to your frustrations! What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs struggling?

…advice from Wilfred’s new season: “keep digging”

Who has been your biggest cheerleader throughout this process?

Minilogs itself. Sometimes I go home frustrated and I start listening to some music with Minilogs. Then I realize I’ve built something that I truly like, and this fills me with joy.

Any regrets?

Yes, I’ve always wanted to be a ballet dancer… More seriously, I try not to do regrets, it’s an endless loop.

How do you picture your company in 5 years?

We want to position ourselves as a leader in Social Bookmarking, especially when it comes to playable contents (videos and music). Mobile, which will be even more important in 5 years, will be a great challenge for us.
