AU was chartered by Congress in 1893 and was founded by John Fletcher Hurst to embody the dream George Washington had of a “national university” in the capital. The school is a private, coeducational, and Methoidst affiliated. It has a liberal arts curriculum and is a doctoral institution. It is famous for political activism. The students who attend American.edu have been recognized in the top 5 by Princeton Review since 2006 for most politically active in the nation. There are nearly 800 full time faculty members and 94 percent of them hold the highest degree in their field. The student to faculty ratio is 12:1. The average class sizes are 22 while the average for graduate courses is around 17. They provide schools for Arts and Sciences, Business, Communication, International Service, Public Affairs and Law. There are 61 Bachelor programs, 54 for Master’s, and 11 for Doctoral. The school has more than 100 AU abroad programs.
