Remember the times when people used to send real paper post cards to each other? Well, now you can revive that old, rather un-green tradition using HippoPost. This useful Facebook app lets you send a free, yes, you don’t have to pay a cent, postcard to any of your friends in the US or Canada. It’s easy too—you don’t even have to touch any paper or ink. Just select a photo from any one of your Facebook albums (this will be the front, printed with glossy paper) and customize your message, including the recipient’s address. Cards arrive within a week, usually. If you haven’t jumpe... read more

Instant messaging clients are everywhere. You’ve probably got at least a few running on your computer at the moment. If you’re keen on getting another, Social.im is worth checking out, especially if you’re a Facebook fan. Social.im doesn’t simply work within Facebook—it actually pulls your friends from Facebook (all of them) and carries them on board the chat client. It works only if your friends have downloaded it too (and if they have Windows, although a Mac version is promised). You’ll need to share your Facebook info to use it, but you’ll get to see your wall, new posts ... read more

One of the site's main highlights is a video reel featuring top entries by community members from any non-pro field. Videos of feats and plays are a big part of the site's main attractions. FriendVox is a messaging service for Facebook that requires no downloads, registration, or installation whatsoever. When you arrive at the FriendVox homepage, all you have to do to get the app working for you is click the blue front-and-center "Facebook" button, which prompts a pop-up (make sure your browser is allowing pop-ups). From there, you'll be able to message them as you would normally on any other messaging service. In additio... read more

Taptu is a "mini" music search app for "mini" spaces, such as your mobile device or your Facebook page. If that sounds odd, don't worry. All Taptu means is that it is a service within a service (an app among the Facebook community or a search bar on your mobile phone). Currently, you can get Taptu's Facebook app, which lets you decorate your profile with album art, videos, images and lyrics and search for music in Taptu's 10 million song database. You can also comment on the music you're listening to so that your friends and networks can gain insight into your musical choices. The mobile app, ... read more

You may know SocialMedia Networks as the company behind many of Facebook's ridiculously successful applications (MyHeritage, Pirates, etc), but you may not fully understand what exactly it is that they do. SocialMedia Networks offers a three-pronged approach to successfully market and profit from your social networking application. SocialMedia Networks offers to developers and advertisers of social media applications advertising, monetization and analytical tools on newly emerging social platforms. Each tool falls into one of three categories: Manage, Market, and Monetization. The list of the... read more

Commentt is a simple interactive multimedia widget that lets your site visitors leave audio or video messages on your website without leaving the page. Commentt's idea is that, in lieu of the standard text messages normally sent between users via MySpace, Wordpress, Facebook, etc, we can now use multimedia messaging. There isn't a lot of information on the Commentt site regarding the widget's interface or customization options (none of the demos worked at the time of this review). It seems that you install the widget differently depending on what type of site you use; Facebook users can instal... read more

inTune is a new Facebook app that lets you discover new music and listen to your favorite songs. It's a lot like My Music, in that inTune allows you to upload songs from your hard drive to share on Facebook, and also similar to iLike in that you can search through a huge database (at this point, about 80,000 songs) of music. Some of the more interesting and unique features offered by inTune include a friends bar, which shows you what other friends of yours enjoy the music you're currently listening to, and a collage feature which offers an aesthetically pleasing display of the album art that c... read more

Social network application company Buddy Media has recently come out with a currency for Facebook users, called AceBucks. You can acquire AceBucks by doing things that you are already doing on Facebook, such as adding applications, taking surveys, playing games, etc. You can cash in your AceBucks on Facebook to buy virtual gifts for your friends, or you can convert them into cold hard cash to buy real items (the site cites iPods and phones as examples). When you sign up, the application urges you to invite your friends, and you'll actually earn more AceBucks for doing so. If you're an applicat... read more

Now that we are being bombarded with widgets for personal webpages and social networking sites, sometimes it's hard to weed out the chaffe and pick one that actually does something interesting. A good bet might be SlideFlickr, a new widget that lets you generate and embed slideshows on your website using Flickr APIs. It's extremely easy to use, but you must already be a photo-sharing member of Flickr to use the service. To create a slideshow, enter in your Flickr username, or the url of your Flickr page, set, or group from which you want to upload photos for the slideshow, and you're done. You... read more

Whether you're a casual jogger who's just getting started or a serious marathoner training for the Boston Marathon, you need a place to log your pace, times, and distances. It's basically a running social network; in addition to charting your data you can also hook up with other runners to swap information or go for a jog. To start, create a personal profile and enter in information about your runs. Once you've m... read more
