Textie is a new application that will have iPhone and iPod users coming back for more, mainly because it lets them do for free something that has always been a paid service: sending out text messages.
This is accomplished by installing an app that becomes tied to your email address, and that email address is what is being used as the basis of the communication between you and other people.
You can send them both messages and images (which are attached in an elegant way), and they will go straight into their Textie accounts. And if they aren’t users of Textie, the will get them as a SMS.
So, the key to Textie’s appeal lies in the way something free such as email is used as a sort of replacement for something paid like text messages.
Note that you can actually tie as many email addresses to your Textie account as you want, and it must be made clear that a paid version of Tetxie does also exist. This paid version comes without the ads that are displayed in the free incarnation of the app. They are not that distracting, really, but I guess it all depends on how extensively you envision yourself using Textie.
