Listia.com - Support Charities In A Novel Marketplace

    listia

The WWW is rife with marketplaces and sites where items are traded in as many ways as you can think of. There are online retailers, auction sites, resources listing classifieds… the list is endless. Time, then, for something which sets out to do things a little bit differently.

This new marketplace lets people bid for items, and having the proceedings go to charities. But instead of using cash, people bid using points. Points are accrued in several ways – you earn them for signing up and you earn them whenever you refer a friend. You also accumulate points when you list items for sale on the site. Alternatively, you can purchase points at a rate which is described online.

In this way, anybody can support his or her favorite charity by donating items he no longer wants. And it has an edge over other services such as Craiglist since the one who is giving the item away will not have to deal with an avalanche of e-mails and pick the one which seems to be the most suitable one. Listia ensures that the one who wants the item the most gets it.

    In their own words

    “Auctions for free stuff.”

Why it might be a killer

It is a very noble initiative that can make a real difference as far as supporting charities is concerned.

    Some questions

How do you create an account? Which charities are already supported?
