Wikia.com - A Collection of Websites You Can Edit

    wikia

Wikia is the place to go to check out communities of sites that have free content that users can edit and contribute to. Anyone can start one and the range of topics for communities is endless. One called ArmchairGM is a Sports Wiki where you can write and read about anything sports related. You can even create a challenge, where it lists what each member must do if the other wins and what the status of the challenge is and what the stats are between the two competitors. Another is an entertainment wiki where people can gossip about the “Britney Spears Update: K-Fed Steps Up to the Plate”. Basically, the options and possibilities are endless. All pages use the same software, but each has a lot more color and pizzazz than the typical wiki. You can even upload media and get an RSS feed on what´s been updated or edited and how many people are checking out your site.

    In their own words

“Wikia are wiki communities creating free content with the MediaWiki software. These are hosted for free by Wikia, Inc., the company which runs the project. Anyone is free to start a new Wikia in accordance with the creation policy and terms of use.

Why it might be a killer

It´s free and has a whole lot of gadgets and tools for site creators to use. They even have a listing of the “top 21 reasons for using Wikia” (http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Why_use_Wikia%3F). Wikipedia is huge and this Wikia is by the same people.

    Some questions

Is the amount of information a bit too overwhelming for people to even know where to begin? Do people like creating sites where their information can be edited out easily? Will people want to spend their time going through everything to find what they are looking for?
