Utilium.com - Changing the Way We Study

The traditional course pack normally consists of a string of photo copied articles binded together in a spiral paper cover. Utilium aims to change that.

Why stick to one medium, when today’s students have access to a range of various media—podcasts, videos, slide shows and interactive articles etc. ? Students aren’t engaged, nor are they inspired by your trad textbook; besides being less than dynamic, they’re expensive and often can be difficult to follow. Utilium allows teachers to compile media rich study packs with fully electronic materials; it’s environmentally friendly and less expensive than text books. Professors may either use a ready made study pack and customize it, or they can create a brand new one and receive royalties upon publication. Sign up for all instructors is free. There is a student access fee for ready made study packs; however, access to Utilium is indefinite, so even after the course is over, students can consult resources on Utilium.

    Some questions about Utilium.com

The idea is definitely novel, but how will this be marketed? Will professors be willing to give up a staple of their courses, namely textbooks? How are ready made course packs vetted?

Why Utilium.com might be a killer

This is an ingenious idea. Different types of media are better for communicating certain ideas than others. Professors using Utilium will engage their students; students will find it easier to pay attention and to keep lessons in mind. Utilium is also much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than normal textbooks.

    Utilium.com In their own words

“Utilium is for undergraduate- and graduate-level instructors who feel that traditional course materials are no longer resonating with their students.
Inspire your students by delivering current videos, podcasts, articles and other rich media from a diversity of academic and professional sources.”
