Unsigned.com - Giving Unsigned Artists a Boost

Unsigned.com is a new musical community designed to help musicians and groups gain publicity. There are two categories of Unsigned memberships; artists create public personal profile pages to showcase themselves and their material, and listeners create their page to specify their musical interests and tastes. In turn, listeners can browse for artists by genre or name. At this time, that's about all that the site has to offer, but it's only in beta release and plans to launch a lot more features in the near future. Soon, listeners will be able to compile a collection of their favorite artists and songs which they will be able to listen using the site's upcoming media player. Additionally, listeners will be able to create and manage playlists. Artists will have the option of selling promotional CDs on the site, and both artists and listeners will soon receive much more customizable profiles which will allow you to choose your own colors, themes, and placement of content zones.

  In their own words

"Unsigned.com is the new voice for independent Artists looking for the chance to be discovered! For bands and solo artists, Unsigned.com provides you with an outlet to be heard by an ever-growing fan and listener base.
This Beta release of Unsigned.com is the result of feedback from Artists and Listeners, and will provide unparalleled choices for Artists to showcase their music... and for Listeners to discover new talent!"

Why it might be a killer

Unsigned.com could be a great way for unsigned artists to connect with a potential fanbase. Artists pay nothing for the service, so it's free publicity, and in the future they can amp up their visibility by selling promo releases on the site. On the other end of things, Unsigned could also be a good resource for listeners looking to discover more underground music.

  Some questions

One registration category is notably absent here: a Producer section. It's great that these unsigned artists will be able to use Unsigned to make and connect with fans, but ultimately, if they want to be signed, they also need to have a means of showcasing their talent directly to producers. Word of mouth sometimes works, but it only goes so far, so when will Unsigned be offering such a method of artist-producer interaction, if at all?
