Streem.us - Tumblr's Amazing Technicolor Twin

You’ll first notice Streem’s abundance of yellow-- it’s overwhelming almost, like a giant neon Post-It note. But then you’ll also see that this bit of sunshiny cheeriness serves as a banner announcing that Streem is not just another microblogging service—it’s different. The service’s founder Imran Zaidi is hoping to accomplish five things—one of which is to flatten the relationship between bloggers and commenters. Everything you post—be it pictures, videos, or texts appears as your micro-blogging stream; even comments are merged into this, and are privileged as much as actual posts. Stylish tabs offer you different options for interacting. You can choose to post a variety of media, or you can check out the various streems of others. There’s also universe tab which shows all posts from the entire Streem community; replying is a cinch. Browse through the public streams and you’ll see that each and every reply is duly highlighted with large, rounded font—equal to the size of the main post itself. Comments, which can be collapsed and enlarged easily, are woven into the flow of the stream rather than being subdued in the background.

  In their own words

“Streem was designed and developed by Imran Zaidi between October 2007 and March 2008. It's a serious attempt to help define the next iteration of weblogging and social media, or to be the Apple to Facebook's Microsoft, or something. But if it's just a neat toy then that's okay too. It's coded in Ruby/Rails/AJAX and pretty sloppy CSS."

Why it might be a killer

Streem’s got a very friendly, elegant design. It’s actually quite down to earth and yet sensual and cool all at once. The fluidity of posts and comments is noteworthy.

  Some questions

At first glance Streem looks like a lollipop—a very bright piece of colorful candy. It’s almost blinding to look at. Much of Streem’s appeal has to do with its design, however it really hasn’t made any innovations as far as features go—you cannot import feeds or post via your cell, nor can you connect with other media.
