The newly launched site Map Runner sports itself as a runner’s ultimate web based companion. It consists mainly of running routes, mapped out by runners themselves. Members can post their own running tracks and they have the option to complete a personal profile with photos etc. Of course, this way, runners can collaborate, fashioning their own routes, or just simply meet up with runners like themselves. So far, England appears to be the most covered nation; the site, is however going international, with runs from India, France and Germany; while the maps might not be as complete as those for the UK, the Map Runner team are working on it. Other features include tagging and rating.

map runner is a collection of runner"s route, routes created by you and other map runners. map runner is a site built by runners for runners, not in the hope of furthering a brand, but with the goal of solving the problem of "where shall I go for a run today?". We saw the oppurtunity to use web technologies to save our own running routes. Then we thought "why not allow others to use our site, better still, why not allow them to completely control the content of the site and rate & share their runs". This way we all benefit from each others input - we"ll all be able to find new runs in our area.

The most useful part about maprunner is it’s social integration; while allowing runners to post their routes is a good, novel idea, it’s even better that runners can find other runners to exercise with. After all it’s a lot easier to stick to a routine if you’re not alone. It ‘s also perfect for finding new routes and challenges.

Would the casual runner use this? Wouldn’t he/she just stick to the normal, known route? Map Runner is a very niche site and may not appeal to a wide audience.
