The expat scene in Switzerland can now get together and discuss the Swiss way of life and their expat cravings on glocals.com. The site, which is available in the Swiss cities of Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Bern and Basel, is designed for both world hopping locals, expats, and new comers. Users, who must be at least 23 to join (to keep the conversation adult, and beyond the realm of Britney Spears and kin), can meet fellow travelers and build up a network of friends/professional contacts. Outings and activities can be organized in the Member Activities section. Users can get all their questions about expat living in the forums, and they can post and browse reviews about restaurants, venues, and services in the CityGuide. Job openings, apartments for rent, and goods and services on offer can be posted in the MarketPlace. Additionally, members can check out exclusive offers from the likes of Zurich Insurance, Ebookers, Bluewin, Holmes-Place, Berlitz, l’Occitane and Mental Fitness.

glocals.com is a very active community, with tons of activities, people and information. The focus is on real world activities and get togethers, and the level of support from the community is amazing. Expats and locals in Switzerland will find it a thorough and well put together resource.

The age limit is easily defeated, and I doubt teenagers would be very interested in joining the site to discuss celebrity pop star antics. Will Glocals expand to other locations beyond Switzerland?

| Nice niche. I'd check carefully to ensure it's not addressed yet. And if it indeed isn't, the guys behind this website should move fast. | ||

| Interesting niche idea, and seems to have good early success (ranked 450 in Switzerland by Alexa). They'll have to tackle a few issue:1. Improve the product. Their site looks very much like 2004, in both design and functions. 2. Expand. Many communities have seen that launching into 1-2 cities is workable, but scaling beyond is a different ball game. 3. Differentiate from facebook (or what ever monster site comes after facebook). 4. Keep a small town feeling as they grow. All in all seems like an interesting case. Good luck!Pete | ||
