Faves.com - An Alternative To Digg

    faves

Faves (formerly Blue Dot) is a Digg-like social bookmarking website. However, Faves claims it's "more" than just social bookmarking, in that it offers a few features that are absent on sites which more closely resemble Digg. The idea is the same, however, you arrive at a site that you like, and you bookmark ("Fave it") to share it with the community. To use the site, you'll need to sign up (at least, in order to create a "Fave"). To create a fave, add the Faves button to your browser's toolbar and click "Fave it" when you arrive at a sight that catches your eye. A window will pop up giving you several customization options, including tags, publicity level, a thumbnail, and a text box in which you can describe the site. You can also browse through others' Faves by tag, topic or user.

    In their own words

"Co-founded in October 2004 by Mohit Srivastava and Sumit Sen, Blue Dot, Inc., is a Seattle-based company whose mission is to help people stay connected with their friends, wherever they are, whenever they want. Through a new type of communication described as Social Discovery®, Faves' free Web site allows users to find, save and share interesting Web content with friends and family. The company's technology lets users quickly communicate and share information on a wide range of topics in a way that can be easily incorporated into their daily activities".

Why it might be a killer

Faves is an interesting, and slightly more visual and intuitive, alternative to Digg. Some users may prefer the convenient snapshot of the site to Digg's format. Faves also makes it really easy to bookmark sites; you can do it with the simple click of a button on your browser.

    Some questions

I'm not sure if Faves's extra features will be enough to launch itself into the limelight currently occupied by sites like Digg and del.icio.us; even though the service has revamped itself it seems to be a little late in the game for such an overhaul to be truly successful.
