In their own words
The labs provide a broader (and deeper) view of Digg. A lot of stuff gets submitted to Digg every day, so good things can sometimes fly right past you. Labs projects look beneath the surface of the Digg community's activities.
Why it might be a killer
I have to wonder how many Digg clients and Digg copycats can survive just based on Digg’s popularity within itself. I would normally propose that since Digg does well then this site will do well, but that depends on a lot of other things. Without an Alexa Ranking or any user generated content to gauge, it is difficult to determine how much site traffic and participants this site is getting every day. Though, I do like the sleek black interface, and I did see tons of cool content that I wouldn’t have normally caught on Digg. Perhaps when this service reaches Digg users looking for the ever more under the radar scoop, they’ll gain more traction.
Some questions
How will this website reach Digg users, where are their RSS feeds?
