WiDR.co.uk - stalking to the max

    widr

Do you wonder where your boyfriend was when he posted a comment on some other girl's Facebook wall? Would you like to know the location from which your friend just logged into MSN messenger? It's 5 o' clock, do you want to know where your kids are (using the Internet)? The creators of WiDR thought you might. WiDR is a downloadable widget that uses WiFi technology to provide personal computers with a "real world location." Wireless signals and similar technological software are used to locate specific Internet users and has surprisingly good accuracy. The goal is to increase accuracy to a target average of 200m as the software develops. So far, the main use for this widget is in social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitters, MySpace and other popular sites that track everything in the lives of it's members, and now their geographical location. The WiDR.com service is free to all non-commercial members and developers are also invited to help raise the accuracy of the system while earning some commission.

    In their own words

"We're three guys who love anything to do with location, mapping and hacking. Between us we have 30 years experience in geography and its applications whilst working in academia, for software firms, consultancies, in public health and for mapping companies."

Why it might be a killer

It is clear that the WiDR team has tried to make the website as clear as possible, however, the technology is a little overwhelming. Tech savvy people will enjoy this software, but people who can't figure out how to design their MySpace page might be too intimidated to bother with it. With better accuracy and time the interest and ease of this software could grow and then attract more users.

    Some questions

The website states that this is not illegal, but doesn't infringe on personal privacy principals? Can people block this tracker?
