Vringo.com - Ringtones for the Eyes

    vringo

Vringo (short for “video ringtones”) is now offering through invitation-only a free beta testing application on its website to download viral video ringtones. Both parties have to belong to Vringo and own phones with the necessary technology for it to work. GSM networks like Cingular and T-Mobile currently have full availability, while non-GSM networks like Verizon and Sprint have limited functionality.

    In their own words

“Vringo, the pioneer in next-generation mobile personalization, announced today the launch of a fun new way for mobile users to communicate with family and friends - via video ringtones (or Vringos). Vringo allows users to share short video clips each time they make a phone call. The service is available now to private beta users, by invitation only.

Why it might be a killer

Mobile phone personalization is a growing industry. The video ringtone is a new innovation in an industry estimated to be worth $5 billion worldwide. The possibilities it provides for the consumer both through licensed material and personally generated imagery seem endless.

    Some questions

Currently only available through certain advanced cell phones, with limited use on non-GSM networks, will people buy the phones and plans needed for it to work? Will adding a visual element to the essentially auditory experience of ringtones catch on? Are consumers willing to pay an additional amount for licensed material?
