Utleo.com - Bringing Open Office to Your Browser

    ulteo

Newcomer Ulteo lets you run OpenOffice 2.3 in Firefox and Internet Explorer. Developed by a team of Linux specialists, Ulteo aims to foster online document collaboration without necessitating downloading the whole OpenOffice suite. OpenOffice sessions can be shared in real time. Documents can be exchanged in PDF or using Microsoft’s Office format. The OpenDocument is also supported. Ulteo is available in a variety of languages. Reqs for using Ulteo: a modern web-browser with Javascript and Sun Java Runtime 1.4+. It has been successfully run on Firefox , IE and Safari; ubuntu users, however need to make sure they are using the Sun Java plugin. The download is free for everyone.

    In their own words

“Run OpenOffice.org 2.3 within your web browser with the Ulteo Online Desktop, manage your office document online, share your OpenOffice.org session in realtime, share your prints and get PDFs...
Important note to Ubuntu users (Feisty, Gutsy): please use the real Sun JVM!”

Why it might be a killer

OpenOffice is used by many as a less costly and even more effective alternative to Word, etc. Ulteo makes it even easier to use by bringing it to the browser. The application is simple to install and facilitates collaboration—it creates a more productive atmosphere and helps you get things done.

    Some questions

How is Ulteo going to make money from this? How will they get that coveted stickiness? Will OpenOffice users find it that much more useful?
