M (Peace Of Mind) Offender Locator is a new product from wireless security provider The Vision 20/20 which allows you to plug in your address and determine whether there are convicted sex offenders in your neighborhood. Once you type in your location, the map (featuring satellite imagery (sponsored by Windows Live Maps) is populated with information about nearby sexual offenders. The service provides a mug shot, name, address, and crimes by the registered offender. You can also have this information forwarded to your mobile device. All of the site’s services are free of charge.

The P.O.M. locator provides a discreet and functional way for concerned individuals to pinpoint where sexual offenders are located, and even lets you report crimes committed by both new and already convicted criminals. The partnership with Windows Live Maps lets you zoom in to determine exactly where the offender lives; you can extremely get a detailed image of the residence as opposed to just a vague address.

While it’s great that the P.O.M. locator lets you identify sexual offenders and determine their location, it doesn’t really do anything. On most occasions, residents are warned when a convicted criminal moves into the area, and most people would adjust their behavior accordingly, so it’s unclear how this application actually aims to prevent crimes from being committed. Additionally, why does it only market itself at “concerned parents”? Sexual offenders can most certainly target all ages.
