In their own words
“The Filter is a free tool for Windows, Mac and Nokia that uses your music to create interesting playlists, automatically fill and refresh your iPod or MP3 player and discover new music.
Why it might be a killer
Plug-ins for iTunes are popular because practically everyone owns an iPod now, so everyone uses iTunes. Playlists are a pain to create, so a tool that does that automatically is great. The iPod shuffle is pretty big right now, so clearly people like listening to a random mix of their music, and this makes all of the music in that mix related.
Some questions
Where are they gaining a profit from? Apple? Will people want to download one more thing to their computer when iTunes and all the music take up a lot of space on the hard drive?
