Skillr allows members to promote whatever skills they may possess, in a clear and visually appealing manner, via a widget that can be posted on any website. Users simply enter in relevant skills- for example, web design, skiing, or break dancing- and a graph maps a user’s bundle of characteristics according to level of expertise (a skill that has been practiced for more time, with the assumption that person is an ‘expert,’ will be awarded a larger portion of the graph). Finally, users are able to search the site to find members that have certain skill sets. Skillr has also recently introduced a new service, called “featured skillrs” that displays the profiles of select Skillr members on the home page.
“Think about what you are really good at. Can you maybe get the highest scores in your favorite computer game? Or can you play wonderful solos on your musical instrument? Can you perhaps capture great moments on your camera? Whatever your skills might be, chances are there are people who would like to talk to you. So, boast your skills!”
Social networking sites, which are meant to showcase individual talents, for the most part only display this information verbally. Skillr takes information display to the next level, and could definitely become a fixture on personal websites.
It is unclear if Skillr has any attributes that aren’t already in a basic excel program. Is the program itself really distinguishable enough to warrant inclusion on a personal web site? It also has users display information relating to skill sets, but it does not attempt to use the website itself as a platform to bring those possessing and seeking specific skills together.
