In their own words
rPath is the company that is pioneering the software appliance approach for application distribution and management. rPath was founded with the goal of making software applications radically easier to create, deploy, and manage. Vendors and customers alike spend far too much money managing the complex interactions between applications and the underlying infrastructure that supports them. We believe software appliances are the answer. rPath is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and we are backed by venture capital firms General Catalyst, North Bridge Venture Partners, and Wakefield Group .
Why it might be a killer
Given the recent increase in application availability on the net, rPath has created a highly developed solution to underlying infrastructure issues that often arise when dealing with application deployment. “Software Appliance” is a nifty little term that I have yet to have seen actualized in other software application management systems. Whether or not it existed prior to their launch, their service is both creative and intuitive, solving an issue that many software, hardware appliance vendors and developers regardless of size should utilize.
Some questions
Will their service detract developers who are accustomed to coding applications entirely themselves? Sometimes debugging is part of the fun, right?
