ReadTheWords.com - Convert Documents, Feeds into MP3s

ReadtheWords is an absolutely free service which converts text into MP3. All you’ve got to do is sign up and select what files you want to convert. Read works with PDF documents, Word, HTML files, and even RSS feeds. From there, you’ll need to select from one of 15 readers (luckily, you’re not stuck with a single, boring voice and there are even accents) and pick your language—French, English or Spanish. Next, pick the speed of the reader—your mp3 will be created in minutes. Finally, download your mp3 to your iPod, post your reading on your blog, make a podcast, or simply listen to it online. It’s that easy. Check it out today.

  In their own words

“ReadTheWords.com began as a simple concept in January 2008: To assist students with learning disabilities with their studies, by means of auditory learning and auditory processing.
To that end we seeked out programers, technologies, and research departments from around the world and came up with a very basic platform, far less sophisticated than what you currently see on our website. Although we had originally intended this site to be used for auditory learning, through our researching efforts we found that the demand for this technology reaches far beyond our originally intended audience. Many other students, young professionals, actors and actresses, research departments, bloggers, ecommerce sites, and others, expressed how this technology could help them with their daily lives, and their businesses.”

Why it might be a killer

ReadtheWords is definitely one cool and practical app. Not only does it help people with disabilities, it’s also great for taking blogs or feeds on the go. You’ll be able to listen to your files at work or on the beach. It’s also perfect for multitasking.

  Some questions

Will more languages be added? How is this funded?

If you like readthewords.com you will love YAKiToMe! http://www.yakitome.com. First of all, it actually works. I've never been able to get readthewords to read any words without some problem or another. YAKiToMe! is more feature packed and covers more languages. All in all, YAKiToMe! is a lot more capable than readthewords.com IMHO. When you review sites like this you should also mention competitive sites as this gives your readers a better picture of what the space looks like. Anyway, check out YAKiToMe! to see what I'm talking about.

I checked out ReadTheWords.com and it was really cool. I typed in my RSS url and converted it to an audio file in seconds. I also tried to type in a website address that had a lot of text. Unfortunatley, the program did not get rid of all the tags. I emailed them at ReadTheWords and they got back to me within a day. While they are working to correct the problem, I simply copied and pasted the text I wanted to convert and it worked Amazing. I am going to be listening to Lauren at the gym, read the NY Times in about 30 min. This is really an unbelievable program and is awesome. I encourage you to check it out. Best of all 100% FREE!!!!
