PolarRose.com - Sort the web of photos

    polarrose

Are you trying to find pictures of someone, or trying to find who someone is in a specific picture? Well, with new technologies developed by Polar Rose, this can be done. Polar Rose makes photos searchable by analyzing their content and recognizing the people in them. In the form of a browser plug-in, the application allows the user to discover who is in a picture in any public photo. The plug-in uses face recognition software, where it detects people in online photos, and provides a little information about the person in a pop-up window, including the name of the person and other photos of them on the web. Users of the site can help train the engine by adding names and verifying information provided by Polar Rose.

    In their own words

“We believe that we have superior technology which will give meaning to digital photos and allow these to be indexable just like text documents on the web are today. We work on friendly, fun, useful and transparent applications, that use computer vision technology to sort and add context to the photo web.”

Why it might be a killer

Face recognition software is very cutting edge and cool stuff, and Polar Rose is bringing it to the public. Being able to provide the user with search results of public pictures just by clicking on the photo of a person in the picture is very exciting. The idea of the application is kind of like how Google like search engines identify text documents, Polar Rose is like that with photos.

    Some questions

How many photos are catalogued with information? Does a photo first have to be tagged to be included in the face recognition process?
