Playfish.com - Social Games for your Social Networks

    playfish

Gaming today has taken off to new heights thanks to social games being introduced to networking sites such as Facebook. Lead creator Playfish is backed by Accel Ventures and $4 million in funding and is responsible for creating 3 of the top 10 games played on Facebook today (Who Has the Biggest Brain?, Word Challenge, Bowling Buddies). Playfish was started by veterans of mobile games and is focused on bringing social games to its users so that they can interact in a real life situation with friends and family. Instead of playing with strangers like with other interactive computer games, Playfish brings you games in a social networking setting so that you can connect with loved ones. Their website itself is packed with blog updates, such as what the 3G iPhone means for social games and for Playfish as a growing company.

    In their own words

"Founded in October 2007 by casual and mobile games veterans and backed by Accel Ventures and $4M in funding, we believe games are more fun when played with friends and family. So we are working on combining the best elements of casual games, social networks, MMOGs and virtual worlds to create entirely new, more social ways of enjoying great games together."

Why it might be a killer

Playfish is killer because it’s exactly what’s being played; its games truly have proven to be a success on popular networking sites. And with new advances in technology (i.e. the new iPhone release), Playfish is surely going to be one to watch. Since it was started by those who know the field and who stress social gaming, Playfish is able to connect with its user base. They have realized that those who twitter are also interested in their games and thus have created a link to show how others are twittering about Playfish, further reinforcing their role in the growth in technology.

    Some questions

What’s next for Playfish? How will they be involved in the launch of the new iPhone? What are the new applications they are working on for Facebook?
