The Jing Project is the latest in drop in the screen capture pool. It manages both screencasting and screen capturing with relative ease.

Plus, it’s free. For now at least. Jing is meant as a complement to your everyday communications; it’s like conversational bling. Whether you’re jotting out an email or responding to a thread discussion, Jing’s there to capture images whenever you need it to (pics make all the difference). Jing’s got a built-in sharing function so you can upload your files directly to Screencast.com. All Jing users will get a complementary Screencast account which means 200MB of storage space and 1GB of bandwidth per month. PC owners will need XP or Vista and Flash 6 or higher (yes, it uses Flash). It’s also Mac compatible.

Jing’s easy to use and it’s free. Mac users will find it practical. It’s relatively light weight and it delivers. Screen capture/cast tools which perform well and don’t cost you a penny aren’t necessarily easy to find.

Users might complain of the Flash component. Screencasts can only be saved as .SWF. .SWF files cannot be uploaded to sites like YouTube. Will Jing change this? Will users be dismayed by the Screencast integration?
