JRails, which has recently been released, is a jQuery alternate for Prototype/script.aculo.us on Rails. It gives you the same Rails helpers for javascript, but using the lighter weight jQuery library. The initial release is capable of supporting basic Ajax calls, RJS, observers, and to a limited extent draggables, droppables, sortables and visual effects. Some drop-in functionality for Prototype, Scriptaculous and RJS is available (see the site’s list). Supported visual effects include: appear, fade, puff, shake, pulsate, squish, shrink, and highlight, among others. These are based on a modified version of jQuery fx code which is still evolving. To use jRails, simply install the app and paste a few lines of code in the head of your page.

jQuery is a useful replacement for Prototype/scriptaculous. It’s got visual effects which aren’t included in the 1.2 version and it’s pretty easy to implement.

Is this merely just a replacement or does it have expanded functionality? How well does this work? Does it serve the needs of its users?
