As more and more of our day-to-day activities are performed with the aid of a computer and more-and-more types of programs spring up to address this increasing need, it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine exactly what a file does by looking at its extension. This is where Dotwhat comes in, by offering a free searchable database of file extension entries, with information on exactly what they do and how they can be used. Dotwhat is mainly focused on programs that run on Windows, Mac or Linux, which should cover the overwhelming majority of the population and the database can be search by either clicking on a letter of the alphabet or by using the search bar. Many of the entries also include a “Tools” section which provides users with options of things they can do to immediately try out the program in question.

We try to provide as much information as possible for each entry, and we encourage all visitors to contact us if they have any additional information, or have a new file extension that they would like added to the database. Alternatively, each entry can be edited and visitors have the option of adding a comment, question or tip!”

Without a doubt, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of the thousands of different file extensions, what they do, and how to use them. Dotwhat should become an increasingly useful site as more and more extensions are added. Also the ability for users to make comments should allow the site’s accuracy and utility to increase over time.
