    CrashPlan.com - Automatic Offsite Backup

    crashplan

CrashPlan is a simple and inexpensive backup service which provides automatic offsite backup online or to the computer of your choice. As with any other service, CrashPlan encrypts, compresses and transmits files offsite; however, there is much more to the service than that. CrashPlan doesn"t require backup schedules; it operates in real time without interfering with your work or play; CrashPlan works across platforms-- Mac, Linux and Windows (and yes you can backup a Mac to a PC and vice versa); with your own destination(s) there aren"t any monthly fees and there"s no limit on how much can be backed up; plus it"s completely secure, files are stored at your destination of choice or offsite. Restoring data, rather than taking weeks, takes minutes with CrashPlan as it"s restored locally. Purchasing CrashPlan requires a one time payment of $19.99 for the normal license or $59.99 for the Pro license; there"s also a free version 30 day trial version.

Why it might be a killer

Crashplan gives you options; offsite storage comes with a monthly charge, however you can opt to store your files on someone elses computer and save money; CrashPlan lets you use your friends" and families" computers for easy backup and quick restore. Plus it runs unobtrusively in the background so it doesn"t interfere with what you"re doing.

    Some questions

Will people really want to backup their files on their friends" computers? Would they rather pay the $5 + a month for offsite storage which could take weeks to restore?
