ShortReckonings.com - Track Group Expenses

Short Reckonings is a free web tool to help you keep track of group expenses and reconcile debts. For instance, you could create an expense sheet to track shared expenses among your roommates. After adding each household member’s name, you would enter a brief description of each expense, the amount spent, who paid it, and which roommates should split the cost. You can add as many roommates or expenses as you need, and Short Reckonings will do the math to tell you who owes how much to whom – in the fewest possible number of payments. Sheets can be printed, shared with friends (by passing along the unique URL for your sheet), or saved. Currently, you must bookmark your expense sheet’s URL in order to return to the saved version, and Short Reckonings deletes sheets after they are not accessed for 90 days. The site promises future versions that will allow you to create an account, where you could save all of your expense sheets together and indefinitely.

  In their own words

“No more hassle in tracking and evening out group expenses!”

Why it might be a killer

The user interface is simple and intuitive and you do not have to register, so it’s easy to get started using this app right away. In addition to roommates, one can imagine many others who might find this program useful – families, friends, travel buddies, couples, a bridal party, club, etc.

  Some questions

Until this site is upgraded to allow user accounts, you could create an expense sheet but if you forgot to bookmark the URL, all of your work would essentially be lost.

A new version was released today: Short Reckonings now supports non-even splits. Each person involved in an expense can be assigned a weight or number of shares. And as usual, the focus was put on keeping the user interface as trivial and quick as possible.Enjoy!

@storkScred.com is nice but all group members must register in Scred before you can create your expense sheet and compute who owes how much to who.Short Reckonings does not require you to register and allows you to create expense sheets without any constraint. The user interface is also designed to allow very quick entry of dozen of expenses. You even have keyboard shortcuts for those who really want to go fast.Of course, Short Reckonings is a young application and many improvements are in the pipe. Stay tuned!

So how exactly does this differ from Scred.com, which was featured here a short while ago? I believe it offers a lot more functionality.
