It’s November 1986 and you’re at a sports bar. The Red Sox are about to clinch the World Series against the Mets. No problem, you’ve got time to run to the bathroom, right? Wrong, it’s the Sox, the athletic manifestation of Murphy’s Law. But let’s say you momentarily forgot this and headed to the bathroom quickly. You come back, the Mets have won the game, and you have missed one of the most memorable moments in sports history. Fortunately these days, we have cell phones and the internet to keep us on top of things to avoid situations like this. A site called RUWT? (AreYouWatchingThis?) aims to take advantage of these two modern phenomena to ensure that you never miss another potentially history-making game. RUWT? works by using their patented bot to scan the internet for game statisctics that might indicate history in the making (for example, a highly-ranked team about to be upset, bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with a full count, etc). When the bot (appropriately dubbed the RUWTbot) finds an exciting game, it submits a “root”. The more roots the bot submits, the higher the chances are that the given game will take a turn for the historical. RUWT? then analyzes these votes and categorizes games into levels of intensity (guarded, elevated, high, and severe). You can view these games complete with the current scores on the RUWT?, or you can sign up for the site’s mobile messaging service and have the alerts sent to your phone, including time left in the game, score, and airing channel to get you off your butt and rushing to the nearest TV.
